What is a Rhizomatous Gesneriad?

A rhizomatous gesneriad is one which has thickened, usually underground stem segments which help it through dry seasons. The plants can regenerate or create new plants from these thickened stems. The rhizomatous gesneriads are mostly native to Central and South America and are closely inter-related. There are many intergeneric hybrids as a result of the close relationship. There are also some rhizomatous gesneriads from Asia.
